Warren Police effectively utilize the NightHawk System to quickly bring safe resolution to vehicle pursuits.
20 November 2023, 1138 hrs. - Officer Legendre is on patrol in a fully marked Warren PD vehicle when she receives a stolen vehicle alert for a Gray Ford 150 Pickup truck in her patrol area. Officer Legendre searches the surrounding area and observes a vehicle matching the alert traveling in the opposite direction. She immediately turns her patrol vehicle around and catches up to the suspect vehicle. Officer Legendre confirms the license plate matches the stolen vehicle alert. She advises dispatch and Officers in the area that she is behind a stolen vehicle and provides her location.
Traffic Stop - Uncooperative Suspect
Officer Legendre activates her overhead lights and initiates a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle pulls to the side of the road. Assessing the situation, she remains in her patrol vehicle, providing loud verbal commands for the driver to turn off the vehicle. The suspect vehicle accelerates away from the stop, driving at speeds in excess of 70 MPH, showing no care for the public or surrounding vehicles on the roadway.
Officer Legendre activates her emergency lights and siren in pursuit of the suspect vehicle.
Minimize Danger to Public
The suspect vehicle continues to flee eastbound on a major mile road for several miles before turning southbound into quiet residential neighborhood streets. With no regard for public safety, the suspect vehicle barrels down the streets at speeds exceeding 2 to 3 times the posted speed of 25 MPH. The suspect vehicle then crashes into a trailer in the roadway and continues to flee from Officers.
NightHawk Facilitates Coordination
Officer Legendre consistently provides updates on the location/direction of the pursuit and inquires if any Officers are equipped with a tire deflation device. Officer Krajewski observes the suspect vehicle approaching him and takes over as the primary unit in the pursuit. The suspect vehicle continues to flee through the neighborhood streets when the passenger bails from the vehicle, running through yards and into a house. Officers Krajewski and Legendre take the passenger into custody moments later.
Officers Rossow and Cobble take over as primary and observe the vehicle circling the area. They coordinate with Officer Gornicz who is equipped with a NightHawk Tire Deflation device. Officer Gornicz quickly positions himself ahead of the pursuit on the side of the road.
NightHawk Enables Quick RoadSpike Deployment
The NightHawk device allows Officer Gornicz to place the device near the road, step a safe distance away from the dangerous point of engagement and remotely deploy the tire deflation device.
Officer Gornicz remotely deploys the spikes seconds before the suspect vehicle passes his location. This action successfully punctures several tires and allows him to remotely retract the spikes in seconds, clearing the roadway for Officers to continue pursuing.
The suspect vehicle continues to flee at a much lower speed for approximately two blocks before crashing into large boulders. The driver then bails from the vehicle, runs through a park, and is taken into custody seconds later.
